DAMASCUS CAPITAL OF CULTURE FESTIVAL _ Syria

DAMASCUS CAPITAL OF CULTURE FESTIVAL _ Syria

Completed in 2007 and funded by the Syrian Ministry of Culture, Story from Damascus reimagines the myth of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves as an allegory for systemic corruption. The film depicts a group of thieves hoarding the city's wealth atop Mount Qasyoun, leaving the population below in ruin. Due to its perceived parallels with the Syrian regime and the Mukhabarat (secret police), the film became highly controversial. While it was produced for the Damascus Capital of Culture program, its pointed political subtext—including a symbolic play on the names and affiliations of the ruling elite—led to it being banned from public screening at the festival.
